Harry Taylor project examples:
Case study / Taylormade:
When Clive Bew of Adidas Salomon Taylormade was given the task of moving the warehousing and bespoke golf club productions to their new premises, he searched for suitable companies on the web and found Harry Taylor. One problem with their 23,000 sq ft warehouse was the potential loss of heat through the roller shutter doors.

The solution:
Harry Taylor’s solution was the installation of 5 Modine PDE warm air heaters controlled by programme stats and located in positions which ensured that the whole building was adequately heated, including the susceptible area around the roller shutter doors. In addition the heaters were complimented by 5 Eliturbo destratification fans, which help to keep running costs down - an important factor with a building of this size.

Case study / Dhamecha Group:
The Dhamecha Group currently serves London and the South East from 5 locations - Wembley, Barking, Enfield, Croydon and Watford. Harry Taylor was first asked to redesign the heating system at the Dhamecha premises in Barking.

An existing radiant heating system had to be adapted to suit Dhamecha's store layout.

The existing radiant tube heaters were perfect to heat the checkout area of the store, but these units only produced localised heat. In order to provide full coverage an uneconomical number of additional radiant heaters would have been needed.

The solution:
Harry Taylor's solution was to install a number of the largest Modine gas fired unit heaters at strategic points around the store to create welcome pools of warmth for the benefit of customers and staff alike.

This solution worked well for Dhamecha so when the group decided to open their Croydon and Enfield Cash & Carry stores they asked Harry Taylor to produce systems based on the Barking formula with radiant heaters for the checkout area and Modine warm air heaters to provide background heating throughout the rest of the store.

Case study / McKenzie Clark:
In the summer of 2006 McKenzie Clark decided to move from their long established premises to a purpose built modern building next door.  This move would allow them to house all their different departments in one modern building.  Heating and cooling would be needed for the whole premises.  McKenzie Clark has a number of multinational customers who increasingly require their suppliers to prove their environmental credentials.  It was therefore extremely important for the Directors of McKenzie Clark to use energy efficient heating and cooling solutions in their new premises.

The solution:
The building was designed to house specialist printing machinery on the ground floor with the office staff sharing a large open plan office on the floor above.  The offices were already heated using a central heating system using efficient condensing boilers and it would have been simple to use air conditioning units to cool the offices in the summer.  However Harry Taylor proposed a system using 3 Evaporative Coolers connected to a bespoke fabric duct which was designed to spread the cool air generated by the coolers throughout the open plan office.

At 25% the capital cost of air conditioning and 10% the running cost it made financial sense to use Evaporative cooling – especially as a similar system using two coolers could be used to cool the printing machines downstairs as well.  The added advantage of using evaporative cooling for the printing area is the introduction of humidity in the atmosphere which greatly assists the printing process - a humidistat is used as part of the control system for the coolers.  A gas fired suspended HT2000 RST heater was installed to heat the printing area.

In recognition of the energy saving benefits evaporative coolers bring this project was part funded by the Carbon Trust.

Case study / Simpac:
In August 2008 Simpac contacted Harry Taylor of Ashton for a quotation for a heating system at their packaging company in Hull. They felt that their fuel bills were excessive and their new gas contract had shown increases that would make matters even worse. They thought that if they were to partition off the stores area and fit a new efficient heating system in the work area only, then this would solve the problem. This was  logical especially in the fact that their old system was direct fired with a low system efficiency. They had even had quotations for construction of the partitioning and this was around £30,000.

The solution:
When Harry Taylor visited site it was quickly realized that the partitioning would not be necessary if a radiant heating system was installed. Radiant heating is ideal for certain applications such as spot heating. A properly designed system will enable heating of a specific work area within a large space without having to heat the space. In the case of Simpac it was easy to fit radiant heaters in specific areas without having to heat the storage spaces as well. Calculations were carried out and because of the fuel savings it became apparent that the new system was eligible for a Carbon Trust Interest free loan. Loans are available from £3000-£200,000 and payback has to be made within 5 years. In the case of Simpac the payback will be much less, fuel savings for January/February periods for 2009 compared to 2008 were over 290,000 kW.
